My Favorite Things: Western Digital My Passport Portable Hard Drive
I have a secret…but I totally trust you. I know it’s between us. It’s…hard drives. And that’s not a euphemism.
I love them – all sizes, brands, I never discriminate. But I recently made my first portable purchase, the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (in Intense Blue!). The lure of taking my iTunes songs and apps with me was the initial reason, although I’ve started a daily backup of current active files which are transferred to my weekly full backup (on a LaCie Porche Drive) and my monthly full disk backup (WD My Book 500 GB). I also bought a case, which carries the drive and cord, my aircard, headphones, a thumb drive and my iPhone connection cord. All neat and clean.
Of course, like all good addicts, I’m already planning my next hard drive purchase, which is a 1TB Apple Time Capsule (I see it as the final – Really! – purchase). Then I set up Time Machine and I’m done.
After all, I can stop any time I want to…
Not even close Jane.
You will get to tera, move to peta, fill up exa, covet zeta and perhaps finally be satiated by your Yotta portable drive.
It’s a variant of Parkinson’s law for data 😉
Thanks for feeding my addiction 😉
I’m also addicted. About a year ago I thought my 1Tb Western Digital was a big deal. Then I stumbled across a 2nd hand SAN (EMC) with fibre, 1.8Tb config and realised what the boys at the big end of town play with. Wow is it fast. Makes the externals look like low, pitiful toys. Bought the kit for my network at the office (Collins Street Business Centre) where I un 4 servers off this one external drive and cannot believe the speed.
So how long before we can go out and buy a cheapie external drive running at today’s SAN speeds?
2 years max perhaps?
The addiction gets stronger and more enticing by the day.
It’s actually getting worse…I saw this and ordered 2 in less than 30 seconds:
I’m starting a support group 😉
Aaah! If only I lived in the US! Unlikely we would see such a deal here. Such drugs cost heaps more down under. The US has the combination of huge competition and a massive downturn in retailing. Drives the prices down.
Maybe I sould go into parallel importing? Just need to ensure that I have enough local addicts to support the new biz.
“Drugs R US” – for the cheapest and biggest external had drives!
Cheers
